Calling

Why being 'called for a time such as this' is not just a Bible verse

Every generation faces one version of the same question: will you use your position, or will you protect it.

There is a phrase that has been printed on more mugs and stitched into more wall art than almost any other line of scripture: for such a time as this. It has become so familiar it risks becoming decorative, a nice sentiment for a hard week. Read in context, it is not decorative at all. It is one of the most demanding questions ever put to someone with power and something to lose.

The story underneath the quote

Esther was a young woman who had, through a series of events entirely outside her control, ended up with real influence in a palace where her own people's survival was under direct threat. She had every reasonable justification to stay silent. Speaking up meant risking the position, the safety, possibly her life. Her cousin Mordecai's response to her hesitation is the part worth sitting with.

Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.

Esther 4:14

Notice what that line does not say. It does not say she will definitely succeed. It does not promise the outcome will be comfortable. It simply reframes the question from will this be safe to what if this position was never meant for your comfort in the first place.

The translation for a modern founder

Very few readers of this essay will be deciding whether to approach a king on behalf of an entire people. Most will be deciding something quieter: whether to build the company that scares them a little, whether to say the thing in the boardroom that needs saying, whether to use a platform they have earned for something bigger than their own comfort or income.

The pattern is identical even though the stakes look different. You did not build this influence, this audience, this capital, purely for your own benefit to enjoy in private. Position was always meant to be stewarded on behalf of something beyond you, and the moment you sense that tension, that is usually not anxiety. It is the calling doing its job.

Why this matters whether or not you call yourself religious

You do not need a fixed theology to recognise the pattern in your own life: the resource, relationship, or reputation that arrived at precisely the moment it was needed, for a purpose larger than the reason you originally pursued it. Call it providence, call it timing, call it the strange logic of a well-lived life. The instruction underneath is the same either way: use it.

  • The influence you have built is not an accident to be enjoyed quietly.
  • The comfortable choice and the called choice are rarely the same choice.
  • Waiting for zero risk before acting is usually just waiting for permission that will never come.
  • The question is not whether you are qualified, it is whether you are willing.

The decision in front of you

If something in your business, your platform, or your influence has been quietly asking more of you than you have been willing to give, that is not a coincidence to manage around. It is the same question Esther faced, arriving in the shape your life has taken: will you use this, or will you protect it.

Forged exists for founders standing at exactly that threshold, ready to stop protecting the position and start stewarding it for something bigger than themselves.

Find out where you actually stand.

Checkmate is the private advisory partnership for established founders carrying increasingly consequential decisions — and wanting sufficiently wise counsel for them.

Faith-led

We build with God at the centre.

The Illuminator Movement is a faith-led movement. We believe every good thing — wealth, influence, talent, time — is entrusted, never self-made, and given to be stewarded well. Profit is a tool. Legacy is the assignment. You do not have to share our faith to belong here, but you should know what we are building on.

Much has been entrusted to this generation. Much will be required of it.
